Waiting for the Tram in Beroun

Waiting for the Tram in Beroun

On May 8, 2024, the 14th annual Waiting for the Tram event will take place in Beroun. The event is inspired by a series of futuristic postcards from 1904, which depict Beroun with tram transport, which never came into existence, but thanks to an unconventional meeting, it comes to life once a year. Participants in historical costumes, their speech and period props create a nostalgic atmosphere of old times. Be part of the live picture and come to wait for the delayed tram. "It was a wonderful atmosphere, as if I had returned to the past for a while," confided Jana from Beroun. The event is suitable for all age groups and is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. The program will offer a meeting with important representatives of the city of Beroun, the arrival of a historic tram to the square, the opening of an exhibition of futuristic postcards by Lederer and Popper and a discussion with postcard collector Ilona Voráčková. The author of the event is Patrik Parízek. Admission is free, so don't hesitate to come and enjoy a day full of fun, nostalgia and history! The event is held in cooperation with the Museum of the Czech Karst in Beroun, tram driver Karolína Hubková, tram designer Josef Hubka and the youngest passenger from Beroun, who will celebrate his 1st birthday on the occasion of the arrival of the tram. Program: from 13:45 Meeting of passengers with important representatives of the city of Beroun 2:00 p.m. Waiting for the arrival of the tram at Berounská náměstí together with the tram driver Karolína Hubková, visiting Václav Antony's bookstore 14:45 Demonstration of Josef Hubka's rail car, constructed directly for the city of Beroun and ceremonial opening of the exhibition The Future in Postcards by Leder & Popper 15:00 Celebration of the 1st birthday of the youngest Beroun passenger 15:00 Conversation with postcard collector Ilona Voráčková in the Museum of the Czech Karst (change of programme is reserved) Registration of costumed participants in the Beroun passengers Facebook group Beroun "meme" After a few years, several sayings (memes) have become popular in the city. Above all, "go to the tram" or "wait for the tram" as an evasive answer. It also occurs as an answer to the question: "What are you waiting for here?". For example: "We caught up with Deputy Mayor Michal Mišina at the new bus stop under the cemetery. "I'm waiting here for the tram," joked the deputy mayor. Although the tram will not arrive, a new bus line will be built here from April 1..." Also, "to catch up with the tram" in the sense of the desire to solve the unsolvable or fulfill the unfulfillable, see "the story about a guy who wants to catch up with the tram in Beroun". Similar to the expression "waiting for Godot", the statement "waiting for the tram" has become established in Beroun. It thus describes a situation where something is expected to happen, but probably never will. (source: Čekání na tramvaj - Wikipedia (wikipedia.org))
