Under the curatorial direction of Mark Gisbourne, this exhibition project by project authors Tomáš Zapletal Cermak and Karel Štědrý presents on the 2nd floor of the Topic House paintings, sculptures, drawings, and kinetic and op-art objects by world-renowned artists from the above-mentioned groups – Zero (Bernard Aubertin), Gruppo N (Toni Costa, Alberto Biasi, Edoardo Landi), and Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (Horacio Garcia Rossi) – whose artistic thinking resonated with that of Bruno Munari, one of the greatest representatives of twentieth-century art, Achille Perilli, founder of the Italian modernist art group Forma 1, and the Czech concretists and constructivists (František Kyncl, Stanislav Kolíbal, Jan Kubíček, Zorka Ságlová) whose works inspired those by the exhibition’s youngest artist, the painter Karel Štědrý. All the exhibited artists share an inclination towards geometric abstraction and the ideas of the international ZERO movement. Their works are presented here in a creative dialogue with Karel Štědrý’s paintings, and viewers may, in Štědrý’s words, immerse themselves in a dance of visual forms. Variations explores how these artists’ paths diverge or, on the contrary, come together throughout history and up to the present day, and documents the development of this art on the domestic and foreign art scenes, including mutual influences and various changes in style and specific approaches across three generations. The exhibition thus offers an unusual chance for comparison and confrontation.
