To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of architect Josip Plečnik, the 8th Open House Prague festival is organising a concert of music by selected contemporaries of Plečnik, featuring mainly compositions by Josef Bohuslav Foerster, as part of the accompanying program. The musicians of the Stamic Quartet, one of our leading chamber orchestras, are the ones responsible for the selection of works. The focus of their interpretative work is on string quartets by Czech and international composers, but they also specialize in works of chamber music. The Quartet bears the name of Jan Václav Stamic, one of the best known Czech composers of the early Classical era, whose compositional legacy includes over 50 symphonic works, a number of violin concertos and many chamber works. Kovařovic: Selection from compositions The concert will take place in the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord at Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, which is the most important Czech sacral building of the 20th century. The church was designed by Josip Plečnik, a brilliant Slovenian architect. This modern and a very distinctive landmark of Prague's Vinohrady, inspired by old Christian designs, was built between 1928 and 1932. Josip Plečnik was one of the close associates of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and was involved in the modernization of Prague Castle as the seat of the President of the newly established state. The concert will be held with the kind support of the concert partner, the Roman Catholic parish of the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord in Prague-Vinohrady, namely its pastor, Father ThLic. Jan Houkal, Th.D. Practical information: The venue of the event is the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord (at Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, Prague 3). Tickets are not sold for specific seats as seats are not numbered. The event will take place without an interval and is expected to last up to 90 minutes. Tickets can only be purchased in advance.
