Director Peter Greenaway saw the first film by Sergei Eisentein when he was 17 years old. Since then, Greenaway has seen all the films by this Russian director. At the same time, Greenaway studied works by his contemporaries abroad, but none of them was so sophisticated and full of other associations. In 2015, Peter Greenaway filmed the Eisenstein in Guanajuato, which refers to a ten-day-long trip that Eisenstein made to Mexico in 1931. The main character looks similar to Eisenstein and is as old as Eisteinstein was at that time. Changing of the fast and impulsive sequences with the slow pathetic ones gives the film a unique dynamics full of associations to photographs by Eadwearda Muybridge or Ansel Adams. The film includes also references to Eisenstein’s films and other artistic works. Peter Greenaway (*1942) originally studied painting and has participated in several multimedia exhibitions worldwide. The film is generally in the Greenaway’s words an illustration of dialogues. But Eisenstein, who met during his career personalities such as Jean Cocteau, Gertruda Stein and Luis Buňuel, realized the films as paintings. --- KINO Rudolfinum is a project by Galerie Rudolfinum and the Czech Philharmonic.
