The French Revolution changed the face of the world, as well as the value system of Western civilisation itself. Blood-soaked, abounding in cruelty, antagonisms, paradoxes, and giving rise to unforeseen consequences, it has become the “mother of all modern revolutions”.

The renowned avant-garde French author and director Ariane Mnouchkine conceived her play as a wide fresco in which she put together the image of the epochal times from various visual angles, raising the question of to what degree it concerned pure ideals, moral and spiritual values, and to what degree it was a struggle for economic and material interests.
