Vladimír Merta/ Sound specific

An intermedia project based on shared visual pictures – objects and sound. Vladimír Merta’s installation in the White Room Gallery presents an artefact – a work summing up author’s experience from many fields and interests. The main composition of the installation consists of: prehistoric stone tools from the Palaeolithic era with sound, self-made musical instruments – mostly electric guitars connected to the sound system, and performing actors of sound active artefacts in motion, Silence and sound. One cannot assure the situation will not develop into visually musical moving event.

We derive the origins of human creativity from the material evidence and tangible culture preserved to this day mainly in a form of stone artefacts. We can say that, in a certain way, we understand the stone tools of the first people. We understand what the tools were used for, we maybe even perceive the aesthetic aspects of their design as something specifically human, as an added value independent of time. But we cannot touch the intangible – the things we cannot hold in our hands do not “exist”. The ways of communication, the expressive means of first people such as sound, light, voice, human speech, music, dance are informative media.
To record and store such media in some memory requires special technologies that our ancient ancestors did not have. And yet we feel and know that it was the communication between people that fundamentally shaped the nature of what we are today. We feel and know that such kind of memory is art. Current art possibly approaches the art at the beginning by its intermediality and openness at least. It is the art that serves as a mass memory that allows us to dwell on earth as humans.

ACCOMPANYING PROGRAM OF THE EXHIBITION:

Performance Voice of Stone within the Art Week.

SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAMS:
Our gallery offers also educational programs for schools in form of guided tours and workshops, you can apply for it by e-mail to: lektori.pragovkaforart@gmail.com or by phone: +420 733 120 550.

Workshop will be focused on thinking about the production of instruments, both musical and working. In addition to the production of a simple instrument, it aims to build awareness of sound production, the possible links between seen and heard, the root causes of music and art.. What could be the reason for sound production? Why were fingermarks made in the Toiran Cave? We invite you and the pupils to experience the first impulses for the creation of art with us. The workshop is designed for all ages, duration is 45 min.
