The peculiar musical character of the free-jazz formation NOCZ is given by its interpretation of the Norwegian trumpeter Didrik Ingvaldsen’s compositions, which combine current trends in experimental jazz with classical free-jazz techniques and a traditional line-up of trumpet, saxophone, double bass, and percussion. The Norwegian-Czech quartet performs with vibrancy and intense dynamic breaks, combining complexly structured passages with open-ranging plateaus, distinctive melodies, and marked rhythmicality. Besides the bandleader, the overall sound and form of the compositions are significantly influenced by the ensemble’s other members: saxophonist Radim Hanousek, double bassist Marian Friedl, and drummer Dag Magnus Narvesen.
