František Ignác Tůma (1704–1774) is mostly known as a composer of church compositions. However, he was also an excellent organist, viola da gamba player, singer and composer. His symphonies and sonatas demonstrate a brilliant use of the “concerto grosso” technique that alternates a small group’s playing (two solo violins, a violoncello or a viola) and a bigger orchestra’s playing. F. I. Tůma is considered the pioneer of this technique in Bohemia.

Tůma belongs among popular composers, which is obvious from the fact that his music was plentifully reproduced already during his lifetime. These reproductions still exist not only in our country but also in other large European cities, such asBerlin,Dresden,RomeandVienna. We can also find his music overseas, specifically inWashington.

Musica Florea’s program includes F. I. Tůma’s so-far unresearched music as well as recently rediscovered composers mainly fromPrague,MoraviaandVienna- V. M. Gurecký and G. Chr. Wagenseil.

The Musica Florea ensemble was founded in 1992 by the cellist and conductor Marek Štryncl. The orchestra devotes itself to stylistically informed performance of music.

What was the sound of music by J. S. Bach or A. Dvořák in the time they composed it? Very different from what we can mostly hear today. We want to share with the audience the magic of (not only) early music played in a way that draws near to the original sound.

Playing music from baroque to romanticism, our work stems from love for the music as well as research: we play on original instruments or copies of thereof, study period sources and aesthetics. We revive forgotten performing styles and methods.

Our repertory includes chamber music, as well as orchestral works including symphonies, oratorios and many more. In cooperation wit dance ensemble Hartig Ensemble – Dances and Ballets of Three Centuries, we managed re-enactments of period operas and ballets. Since 2014 we also use and still build our mobile stage: Florea Theatrum, build on the principles of baroque theatre.
